The Oedipus Complex Reread by Lacan: Beyond the Paternal Metaphor by Colette Soler
Saturday, January 23, 2016 10:30 am – 2:30 pm
The School of Visual Arts, 136 West 21st Street, New York, NY

Lacan’s best-known teaching about the Oedipus complex is his paternal metaphor. To many, it goes as far back as the “The Question Preliminary to Any Possible Treatment of Psychosis.” But when does he first challenge that metaphor and move beyond it? The workshop will map this out, to see what clinical consequences it implies.

Suggested Readings: Lacan: Écrits, “On a Question Prior to Any Possible Treatment of Psychosis” (1956) and “The Subversion of the Subject and the Dialectic of Desire” (1960); Autres écrits, “L’étourdit” (1973).

Colette Soler practices and teaches psychoanalysis in Paris. Formed as an analyst by Lacan, she is a founding member of L’École de Psychanalyse des Forums du Champ lacanien. Among her many books, those translated into English include What Lacan Said About Women; Lacan: The Unconscious Reinvented and Lacanian Affects.

Attendance fee: $50. For students with ID: $20.
Attendance is free for all members of Après-Coup as well as for the faculty and students of the School of Visual Arts.
