Understanding the Loss of Understanding Between Couples at CFS

Understanding the Loss of Understanding Between Couples One-Session Program (2 Contact Hours)”
Instructor:      Monica Vorchheimer
Date:               Sunday, January 31, 2016
Time:               3:00-5:00pm
Location:         Upper West Side TBA

This paper focuses on the couple as a psychoanalytic object; conjectures emerge from the observation of Psychoanalysis with couples in a joint setting and aims to enlighten the difficulty couples have when speaking and understanding each other. I will explore what happens when they lose their capacity to make themselves understandable and to understand their partner and why this difficulty is often felt as deceiving and even catastrophic. The discontent brought about by the lack of understanding presupposes the belief that there existed a time – which they place in real events of the past – where full understanding existed. The author suggests that the idea of having had full understanding is illusory and that it is the effect of the narcissistic foundation of every couple.  This original narcissistic myth provides the link with a representation that is supposed to be shared between the partners and lends to the feeling of identity of the link, the sense of an “us”, the feeling of “belonging”.   Suffering or having conflicts is the evidence of the loss – or the threat of loss – of their identity as a couple. The author suggests that couples have a need of representing the couple as a concrete and not fleeting experience and discontent arises as the consequence of the disillusion of the illusion which was supposed as shared.
