From Fantasy to Phantasy: The Here and Now and the Total Transference

One-Session Program (2 Contact Hours)
Instructor: Abbot A. Bronstein, PhD
Date: Wednesday, January 13, 2016
Time: 8:00-10:00pm
Location: Upper West Side TBA

This presentation will discuss the evolution and shifts in the concept of phantasy and transference in my clinical and theoretical thinking about psychoanalysis. The manner in which phantasy emerges into the here and now of the consulting room and becomes alive in the transference, has become a central aspect of psychoanalytic thinking as to how psychic change occurs. Within the ever shifting internal world of the patient the psychoanalytic “data’’ brought via thoughts, dreams, associations into the transference relationship within the psychoanalyst’s consulting room gives rise to the selected facts of the analytic process.

The movement from fantasy as described by Arlow and Abend to phantasy, thru the work of Klein, Meltzer, Segal, Spillius, and Joseph constitutes for some a dramatically different approach to the unconscious elements that are part of the psychoanalytic dialogue.

Listening and working in the here and now differs markedly among our psychoanalytic schools of thought. The role of unconscious phantasy as central to the transference interpretations in the here and now will be discussed. How this evolution in my own psychoanalytic practice has evolved from my early training with Interpersonal psychoanalysts (Wolstein) and Ego psychologist-analysts (Arlow, Silverman, Wallerstein, Weinshel, Calef) to the work with the Contemporary Kleinians in the last 25 years (Meltzer, Segal, Spillius and Joseph) will be discussed.

Abbot A. Bronstein, PhD is a Psychoanalyst in San Francisco. He is an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Psychoanalysis and the Editor of the Analyst at Work Section of the IJP. He has published and written papers and presented nationally and internationally. Most recently he has published “ The Analyst’s Work” in the IJP and “Mrs. Klein, the contemporary Kleinians and the drives: are they what drive the theory and clinical work”, in the Journal of Contemporary psychoanalysis. His latest paper coauthored with Marie Rudden titled “Transference, Relationship and the Analyst as Object: Qualitative Findings from the North American Comparative Clinical Methods Working Party” will be published in the IJP in 2015.

Other papers include “Fetish, Transitional Object and Illusion”, “Grievance and Change”, (invited presentation in London at the UCL conference in honor of Betty Joseph) and “Dreams anal masturbation and primal scene: patients who already know” at a meeting honoring Don Meltzer’s contribution to Psychoanalysis in Seattle.
