Introduction to the Collaborative Clinician-Researcher Project
Wilma Bucci, Leon Hoffman, Bernard Maskit, & Sean Murphy
Free. All are welcome. RSVP
The tension between science and practice in psychotherapy is well known. At the Pacella Research Center of NYPSI we have been trying to bridge that gap. For the Academic year 2015-2016, the Academic Research/Referential Process Seminar will address this issue by initiating a Practitioner-Researcher Collaboration. In very general terms, the project will involve clinicians providing session material which might be recordings or verbatim transcripts, and might also be process notes, and researchers analyzing this material using currently available tools. Clinical and research perspectives on the material will then be discussed and compared. Ultimately these collaborations may also lead to fruitful ways to address supervision. Our goal for the first meeting, which will be a public seminar, will be to explain what the project is about and what we hope to accomplish. We will discuss how to examine recorded sessions and process notes as a basis for research on factors affecting therapeutic change and provide an illustration of the potential clinician/ researcher collaboration using a fully recorded short term psychodynamic treatment. We will also discuss the necessary safeguards that will be in place in this project, to enable use of sensitive clinical material. We hope that a working group will be formed on the basis of this first public meeting to address these and other goals that might be suggested. We hope this group will include senior analysts and therapists, psychoanalytic candidates and other trainees who might find this experience useful.
NO CME OR CE CREDITS WILL BE OFFERED.
