Adrienne Harris: Winnicott and Gender Madness
In this presentation Dr. Harris will explore a not so well known vignette from Winnicott’s work with a middle-aged man in analysis. He tells the man at a certain moment in the session when the patient is talking about penis envy, ‘I hear a girl.’ He wrote about this vignette and the case in a number of published and unpublished accounts. Dr. Harris will use this vignette and Winnicott’s discussion of bisexuality and ‘being’ to think about the origins of intersubjectivity and of the entanglement of desire and gender. Through this vignette she looks at the interweaving psychoanalytic views of Laplanche, Winnicott and Loewald, in conversation with contemporary gender theory.
