This two-session program will introduce and explore Donald Meltzer’s concept of the claustrum, which is an original and significant contribution to modern psychoanalytic thinking. Two films will be used to illustrate the concept and provide shared ground for the lecture and discussion.
Donald Meltzer’s book “The Claustrum – An Investigation of Claustrophobic Phenomenon” develops and elaborates Kleinian ideas about projective identification in such a way that the clinician is better able to understand patients’ experiences of being trapped in habits of mind that preclude the possibility of authentic intimate connections. The two films used in the workshop show how there is a continuum of disturbance, ranging from ordinary periods of isolation to severe entrapment leading to chronic and destructive pathology.
Pamelia Sorensen, PhD is a psychoanalytic child psychotherapist trained at the Tavistock Clinic in London, UK in the 1970s. She is the author of journal articles and book chapters about infant development, child psychotherapy, and the training of clinicians. She is the former director of The Under Fives Study Center at the University of Virginia, and provides supervision and consultation to psychologists, social workers, and counselors engaged in psychoanalytic work. Her special interest in Donald Meltzer’s work stems from the inspiration of many years of personal supervision with him.
Learning Objectives:
After attending this program, participants will learn:
1. How Meltzer’s concept of “intrusive” projective identification is different from the original concept developed by Melanie Klein and why this is clinically useful.
2. To identify personality characteristics that adhere to the unconscious phantasies associated with different parts of the claustrum.
3. To understand the range of claustral experience and what factors mitigate chronic feelings of entrapment.
Continuing Education Credits:
The Psychoanalytic Training Institute of the Contemporary Freudian Society SW CPE is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #0087. CE credits are granted to participants with documented attendance of the entire program and completed online evaluation form. No partial credits will be offered. It is the responsibility of the participants seeking CE credits to comply with these requirements. Upon completion of this program and online evaluation form, participants will be granted 8.5 CE credits.
