The Psychoanalytic Training Institute of The Contemporary Freudian Society: Foundations of Psychoanalytic Practice
We are pleased to offer an eight-week course on Analytic Listening and Concepts beginning Fall 2015. This course qualifies for 12 Continuing Education credits.
This course is suitable for students from a wide variety of backgrounds, including practicing clinicians from all disciplines, recent graduates of Masters-level or Doctoral-level programs, professionals considering changing careers, and anyone interested in exploring the possibility of post-graduate psychoanalytic training.
Applicants to our Psychoanalysis Training Programs are also encouraged to enroll.
Analytic Listening and Concepts

How we listen, what we listen for, and how we choose what to speak about are at the core of psychoanalytic practice and engagement with analysands.
Based on the investigation of clinical consultations and readings about first sessions, participants will have the opportunity to discuss how these initial encounters can stir “emotional turbulence” in both the analyst and the patient.
Psychoanalysis has a body of knowledge that informs our listening and our speech. In this eight-week course, the student will study some of these central psychoanalytic concepts. Participants will be introduced to an integrative approach that incorporates listening to both child and adult patients. Within this framework, students will learn to listen for and recognize different levels of anxieties, to hear evidence of unconscious fantasy in clinical material and in dreams, to discern the difference between symbolic communication and concrete communication and to recognize transference phenomena and their own counter-transference reactions.
Learning Objectives:
1. Participants will be able to define the meaning of analytic listening.
2. Participants will be able to identify three differences between concrete and symbolic communications.
3. Participants will be able to identify three ways in which anxieties are communicated in initial sessions.
4. Participants will be able to define transference and counter-transference reactions and identify three ways in which this can help or interfere with the beginning phase of treatment.
Continuing Education Credits:
The Psychoanalytic Training Institute of the Contemporary Freudian Society SW CPE is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #0087. CE credits are granted to participants with documented attendance of the entire course and completed evaluation form. It is the responsibility of the participants seeking CE credits to comply with these requirements. Upon completion of this course, the evaluation form, and CE credit payment, participants will be granted 12 CE credits.
