In honor of the passing of Fred Sander, one IPBooks’ first and favorite authors, We would like to again feature his book, Created in Our Own Images.com.
My own personal contact with Fred spanned the better part of a year in 2010 as the production manager and typesetter for this book. I found him always to be warm, enthusiastic, and welcoming with a fun-loving spirit, and open to discussing ideas as we shared several articles and links along the way–and some long phone conversations–whether relating tangentially to the book, or at times just for fun.
This book brought to light a long-forgotten comedy by W.S. Gilbert (of Gilbert & Sullivan fame) not published or produced since 1898, namely . . .
the play, Pygmalion and Galatea.
Fred combined the full text of the play with commentaries from expert authors in fields ranging from psychoanalysis to genetic science, futurism, literature, and ecology, He had a unique vision for integrating the fields of entertainment and study in a new and thought-provoking format featuring essays contributed by Tom Freudenheim, Jamie Love, Bill McKibben, Lee Silver, Jonathan Shaw, Carolyn Williams, and Fred M. Sander himself on the seemingly innate desire to try to design our progeny in our own image.
As one reviewer put it, “Using the play as a springboard, the book also contains a series of provocative, informative essays on our penchant as human beings to try to get others to conform to our images of how they should be and to find ways of reproducing ourselves. Each essay is written by an expert in a particular discipline, including psychoanalysis, gender roles, art, and cloning. I highly recommend this unique and important book.”
I have no doubt that Fred was also a brilliant analyst in his own right as well, as he always showed a keen listening ear and, as the book demonstrated, an ability to integrate, interpret, and represent divergent points of view and perspectives on a subject.
