Sabina Spielrein is best known as Carl Jung’s patient and mistress and for a minor role in his friendship and rift with Freud. For “Sex Versus Survival,” his groundbreaking new biography, Dr. Launer has used in-depth research into Spielrein’s letters, diaries and professional papers to show much of this familiar story — dramatized in the film “A Dangerous Method” — is a myth. In its place, Dr. Launer rediscovers a highly original thinker who was marginalized for trying to bring together Freudian and Jungian ideas, feminism, child development and biology. Recently published in Britain and the United States, “Sex Versus Survival” has encouraged a well-deserved re-evaluation of Spielrein’s legacy to psychoanalysis.

A physician, psychotherapist, educator and author, Dr. Launer is a senior Tavistock Clinic staff member and associate dean for postgraduate medical education at the University of London. For additional information: www.johnlauner.com.
