Dr. Zaretsky will present a new reading of Moses and Monotheism. The usual readings emphasize the way the book presents a view of Jewish identity. HIs reading will argue that at a deeper level the book was a meditation on the fate of psychoanalysis in the era of both totalitarianism and the American century, i.e. the integration of psychoanalysis into American culture. To make this argument requires clarifying both what a Freudian approach to history looks like, and how the history of psychoanalysis fits into twentieth century history overall. Key concepts for this approach include regression and Geistigkeit.

Eli Zaretsky, Ph.D., Professor of History, has taught at Lang College at The New School since 1999. His interests are in twentieth century cultural history, the theory and history of capitalism (especially its social and cultural dimensions), and the history of the family. His most recent book, Secrets of the Soul: A Social and Cultural History of Psychoanalysis, is currently being translated and appearing in the major European languages as well as Chinese. He is the editor of The Polish Peasant in Europe and America; and of Capitalism, the Family and Personal Life which itself appeared in 14 languages. He is currently writing a book entitled The Idea of the Left.

All are welcome.

NO CME OR CE CREDITS WILL BE OFFERED.
