Montana Katz will describe and compare the three main paradigms of contemporary
psychoanalytic field theory. These are the models based on the work of Madeleine and Willy Baranger in South America, on psychoanalytic developments in North America which are included in the Relational Turn, and on the work of Antonino Ferro in Europe. Katz will discuss antecedents to contemporary psychoanalytic field theory going back to the dramatic scientific and other changes dating back to the turn of the last century. She will trace the simultaneous rise mid last century in South America and North America of independent and different field theory models and then another model developed later in Europe.
The discussion will focus on the clinical techniques of each of the three models. Katz will offer clinical examples to demonstrate how analysts work in each of the three field theories. Finally, Katz will indicate how psychoanalytic field theory may offer psychoanalysis the tools to move the fragmentation of the discipline towards a constructive and non-hierarchical pluralism.
Montana Katz, Ph.D., LP is a Training and Supervising analyst on the Faculty of The National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis and an Affiliate Faculty member at The Austen Riggs Center. She is on the editorial boards of The Psychoanalytic Review and Psychoanalytic Inquiry.. She is the editor of METAPHOR AND FIELDS: Common Ground, Common Language and the Future of Psychoanalysis (Routledge, 2013), is currently working on a book on comparative psychoanalytic field theory, and is editing a book on future directions for Martin Silverman, M. D. is a Training and Supervising Analyst and Supervising Child Analyst at the Institute for Psychoanalytic Education affiliated with NYU School of Medicine; Training
and Supervising Analyst at the Center for Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy of New Jersey; Associate Editor and Book Review Editor of The Psychoanalytic Quarterly; Emeritus Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the NYU College and the NYU School of Medicine; and the author of over 60 psychoanalytic papers and book chapters and over 80 psychoanalytic book reviews.
