THE USE OF THE ANALYST’S FEELINGS IN PSYCHOANALYTIC TECHNIQUE
Although many contemporary analysts no longer view countertransference exclusively
as a interference, nor aspire to the classical ideal of emotional neutrality in their interactions with patients, most discussions of the use of the analyst’s feelings are limited to the importance of the analyst’s authenticity and/or empathy. As crucial as these qualities are, they represent only a sliver of the emotional experiences people require in the maturational process. These experiences have analogues in the analytic relationship that can be provided through the analyst’s goal-oriented expression of feelings: emotional communication. Emotional communication serves specific functions in the treatment that can be differentiated from those of interpretation. It can be used in both interpretive and non-interpretive ways of relating to the patient that are grounded in an understanding of the transference. After looking at the role of the analyst’s feelings in general, we will focus on one particular class of feelings — those grounded in narcissistic (or self-object) relatedness, and describe how these feelings can be expressed in ways that amplify the therapeutic power of the analytic relationship.

Paul Geltner, DSW is the author of Emotional Communication: Countertransference Analysis and the Use of Feeling in Psychoanalytic Technique, as well as paper’s on dreams, child and group analysis. He was formerly the Director of Psychoanalytic Education at the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Study Center. His private practice is in New York City, where he specializes in individual and group supervision.
