For the first time, YIVO’s Jacob Kronhill Visiting Scholar David Fishman tells the dramatic story of how poets Kaczerginski and Sutzkever rescued YIVO’s treasures from the Vilnius Jewish Museum, smuggled them across international borders, and sent them on to YIVO’s new home in New York.

Drawing on the YIVO archives, including found footage of holiday balls, cartoons from the Forverts, immigrants’ autobiographies, and landsmanshaftn records, historians Eddy Portnoy (Rutgers, YIVO), Roberta Newman (YIVO), Daniel Soyer (Fordham), and Rebecca Kobrin (Columbia) present a rarely seen slice of New York Jewish life in the 1920s and 30s.
