TREATMENT OF TRAUMA, Engaging the Extremely Dissociated Patient: Anger, Aggression, and Self-Harm

In this detailed clinical presentation Dr. Itzkowitz will be describing his work with traumatized patients, specifically his psychodynamic work with a patient struggling with dissociative identity disorder, which is thought to be caused by severe physical, sexual or psychological trauma during early childhood. Through the use of video we will have the opportunity to see how he engages different dissociated self-states as they wrestle with angry, aggressive feelings, and the patient’s fear that expressing her anger might result in destroying the therapist and the therapeutic relationship. Self-destructive thoughts are discussed in the context of two recent unsolicited, memories of early childhood abuse. A dissociated, perpetrating self-state who believes she is a separate person with a separate body wishes that the Host personality would die. We will have a chance to see how Dr. Itzkowitz helps the perpetrating self-state begin to acknowledge that there is only one body, and that she inhabits the same body as the host.
