Dear Colleagues:
This has been a week of remembering historical events. Memorial Day of course commemorated the wars of the 20th and the current 21st century and the military sacrifices. It seems like a coincidence – though I wonder if nature/weather at this time of year has an effect on human mood and behavior – we also commemorated Kristallnacht on November 9-10 1938 and the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989.
The current and past political events are reelected on our website in posts which put an analytic slant on the world.
As usual I will not list previous Announcements, will tell you my current choices followed by the entire list of contents.
My choices this week are:
1) It seems that the books have it for me this week.
a) A new book about Himmler and Eichmann caught my eye: “No Banality in This Evil” – also reminiscent of the recent Bettina Stangneth’s powerful new book “Eichmann Before Jerusalem”.

The tragedy of 9/11 women who were pregnant and widowed and their infants Beatrice Beebe PhD; Clinical Professor, NYS Psychiatric Institute, Columbia University
Acute traumatic loss has wide-ranging effects on ordinary individuals, especially parents and children, yet infants and young children are often forgotten in a disaster. In October, 2001, Beatrice Beebe, a mother-infant researcher and therapist, together with other highly trained therapists, began a therapeutic project to try to help these women and their infants born after 9/11. This project also had a research component. Mothers and infants were seen for a video-based therapeutic consultation. Because of our therapeutic involvement we have a unique set of videotapes of mother-infant ***.

XVI. Quote for the Anniversary of Kristallnacht
According to me, anti-Semitism as an attitude is not the worst of sins, but it is a dangerous one. It is the first step in an exclusion mechanism that starts with social avoidance and in its extreme form leads to death and destruction. That is why it should be dealt with thoroughly in public debate. . . . When a leader of an organization is caught being anti-Semitic the organization must make it clear that this was not done on its account. This is even more true for a psychoanalytic organization. Only then can things return to normal.

XLV. Otago neuroscientists reveal mechanism crucial to molding male brains
on The Eureka News Website.
Caption: Professor Allan Herbison is leader of a team discovering that neural circuitry they previously showed was vital to triggering ovulation also plays a key role in moulding the male brain. They have found that male-specific signalling in the Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neurons of new-born mice is crucial to generating a testosterone surge that occurs up to five hours after birth. This brief but powerful increase in testosterone blood levels, which only takes place in males, is known to cause their brains to develop differently to females.
