PSYCHOTROPIC DRUGS: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW & CURRENT TRENDS

This course highlights the cutting edge of psychopharmacology to acquaint participants with the major trends in diagnosis and medication.The aim is to help the clinician recognize when a treatment could benefit from a psychopharmacology consult or ongoing medication backup. Included are issues of how to approach this with patients/clients, as well as medication side effects and their possible (and impossible) remedies. Topics included are: depression and bipolar illness; anxiety disorder spectrum (e.g., panic states, OCD, body dysmorphic disorder, phobias); psychosis; drugs in pregnancy; sleep disorders.Questions (including case presentations) will be encouraged.
Dr. Deborah Plachta is a member of NYPSI, the American Association of Clinical Psychopharmacology, Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and is certified by the American Psychoanalytic Association. Psychopharmacology has been a particular focus of hers for many years, during which she has practiced as psychopharmacology backup for a broad range of patients as part of a tertiary referral group.
The Extension Program welcomes mental health professionals, trainees in fields of psychiatry, psychology, and social work, and any members of the community who are interested in psychoanalytic principles.
Educational Objectives: After attending, participants will be able to
1) Recognize biologically-driven syndromes that underlie presenting symptoms and often require medication to resolve.
2) Recognize common side effects of medications, and distinguish them from somaticizing.
3) Assess patient fear and resistance to medication with the aim to improve conflict exploration and allow access to feelings that would otherwise be repressed as too dangerous.

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of the American Psychoanalytic Association and the New York Psychoanalytic Society and Institute.
