In his groundbreaking new book, Fifty Shrinks, psychiatrist and photographer Sebastian Zimmermann presents a fascinating, first of its kind, photographic survey of the current field of psychiatry and psychology through penetrating portraits of fifty therapists all taken in the most sacred of places — the private office where they see their patients. Ranging from luminaries to newly minted analysts, Zimmermann’s subjects hail from widely different orientations that collectively reveal the diversity of approaches to therapeutic practice today.
A reception and book signing for Fifty Shrinks, which has received critical acclaim since its publication last month, including a feature in The New York Times, will take place on Monday, November 10 from 6-7:30pm
at The Corner Bookstore located at 1313 Madison Avenue (corner of 93rd Street), New York, NY 10128. Sebastian Zimmermann and some of the therapists featured in his book will be in attendance to sign copies.
In over twelve years, Zimmermann gained extraordinary access to many well-known practitioners. His intimate portraits draw the viewer into each picture, offering tantalizing clues to their interests through their offices that range from elegant to cozy to sparse. The photographs are illuminated with excerpts from Zimmermann’s candid conversations with his colleagues, and together the photographs and texts create a moving document, testifying to each therapist’s wisdom and empathy for their patients.
In Zimmermann’s portrait of the beloved and acclaimed psychoanalyst Dr. Martin Bergmann (on the cover of the book), he is looking down in thought while seated in an elegant office anchored by a towering bookcase and sweeping views of Central Park outside his windows. The details in the photograph reinforce an atmosphere of contemplation, with Bergmann’s description of his methods ending with this life-affirming statement:
It is as if an analyst is living not only his own life, but also the lives of countless other people. So I think I am making a bargain with death; I am cheating. I am living more than one life.
