Richard C. Friedman, MD Received ASPP Sigmund Freud Award for 2014

The American Society of Psychoanalytic Physicians is pleased to announce that Richard C Friedman, MD is recipient of the Sigmund Freud Award for 2014. Previous awardees include Otto Kernberg, Charles Brenner, Arnold Richards, Glen Gabbard, Henry Lothane, Robert Michels, Aaron Beck, James Strain and, most recently, Mark Solms. Dr. Friedman was cited for his pioneering work on human sexuality.

Dr. Friedman is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Weill Medical College (Cornell) and Lecturer in Psychiatry at Columbia. He has been a researcher, educator and clinical scholar in psychoanalysis. Dr. Friedman carried out the first study of the effects of sleep deprivation on the performance of physicians. He went on to do important research in endocrinological and psychodynamic dimensions of male homosexuality as well as affective disorders. His book on psychoanalytic aspects of male homosexuality had a major impact on the field of mental health in terms of both our understanding and treatment of patients.  He followed this with a second book co-authored with Jennifer Downey, MD which  discussed  sexual orientation and psychoanalysis  in both sexes. Dr. Friedman is the Editor of Psychodynamic Psychiatry, the journal of the American Academy of Psychoanalysis and Dynamic Psychiatry. He has served on the Psychosexual Advisory Board to the DSM-III, the version of the Diagnostic Manual in which homosexuality was deleted as a mental disorder. He previously received the Mary S Sigourney Award (2009) for distinguished contributions to psychoanalysis.
