Dear Colleagues:
Our world this week is in an unruly mess in the political, health and financial areas and the international website posts reflect these, as you will see – whether it is in the reprise to WWII, in the post on AIDS and spread of infections, or in the news about the Waldorf Astoria’s purchase. As usual, I am not re-posting some of the Announcements and am giving you my own particular choices with the hope that you will find yours.
My choices this week are:
1) If you have not already, please read and comment on the website regarding the courageous efforts of Sandra Leong and Kerry J. Sulkowics in their open letter to President Bollinger and the Board of Trustees in the Columbia Spectator on October 2, 2014.and Emma Sulkowicz, CC ***15, performance art-protest, ***Carry That Weight,*** raising awareness about sexual assault on campus and turning victim hood to activism.

2) Please do pay attention to Deborah Peel on Medical Privacy

3) The books always grasp my interest – this time I am very eager to read Patrick Modiano books. He just won the Nobel Prize in literature and focuses on memory, loss, identity and seeking.
“Peter Englund, the permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, recommended that readers unfamiliar with Modiano***s work begin with “Missing Person” (“Rue des boutiques obscures***), a novel from 1978 that describes a man who lost his identity during the Paris Occupation. “It’s a fun book,” Englund said. “He’s playing with the genre.”

4) Also in Books category I am intrigued and will read
Kavaler-Adler’s, (2013). The Anatomy of Regret: From Death Instinct to Reparation and Symbolization Through Vivid Case Studies

5) Memory of the Holocaust reappears over and over – in the books about Germany, Lithuania, the losses, the memories and the importance of empathy.

6) Please note CAPA graduates still seeking supervisors!

7) Erik Erikson’s life and works reviewed on the website this week. For those of us who see children and are interested in development throughout life, he has been a crucial role model.
