The Third Rita Frankiel Memorial Lecture
“The Other Current” by Priscilla Roth
Friday November 7, 2014 7:00-9:00pm
Mt Sinai Medical Center, Hatch Auditorium, Madison Ave @ 100th St
The title of Priscilla Roth’s paper comes from Freud’s discussion of disavowal and refers also to John Steiner’s development of this concept in his description of psychic retreats. It also recalls the Meeting of the Rivers of the Amazon, where the Rio Negro and the Rio Bianco flow side by side without mixing for some time, until, at a certain point, traces of the one can be detected in the other.
Priscilla Roth’s paper examines a complex, tightly organized phantasy operating ubiquitously, but unconsciously, in a patient in analysis and shows how this phantasy became, of necessity, an integral part of the transference and countertransference. In detailed clinical material, she describes the problems facing both patient and analyst when this ‘other current’ – an alternative organization of reality around an anti-reality – is threatened.
Priscilla Roth is a Training and Supervising Psychoanalyst at the Institute of Psychoanalysis, London and a Fellow of the British Psychoanalytic Society. She is the author of numerous papers and the editor of several books and teaches in Britain, Europe and the United States.
