What does YIVO want for its birthday? Your ideas!
We’ll tell you a secret. In 2015, YIVO turns 90. Yes, it’s a big birthday, and we’re proud of our work through the years, including some of the exciting things we’ve been working on in just this last year: The Vilna Project, Letters to Afar, the YIVO Digital Archive on Jewish Life in Poland, and of course our Uriel Weinreich Summer Program in Yiddish Language, Literature, and Culture, along with two terrific public programming seasons.
But now, we want to hand you the mic — we want to know what you’d love to see on the YIVO stage. That’s why we’re asking you to send us your public program ideas for our 90th anniversary. We’ll pick our favorite, and collaborate with the winner to produce it in 2015.

Seventy years after a donation of 200 works of art disappeared on its way to be gifted to the “Jewish autonomous region” of Birobidzhan, visual artist Yevgeniy Fiks made an attempt to complete the gesture by inviting 25 contemporary artists to donate work to the Birobidzhan Art Museum. Join Fiks, scholars Kolya Borodulin and Gennady Estraikh (NYU; YIVO), and curator Erin Sickler for a discussion of the project and the legacy of Birobidzhan. Read more…

Novelist Howard Fast (1914-2003), remembered today as the blacklisted author of Spartacus, was one of the most prominent Communist intellectuals in the United States until his well-publicized break with the Communist Party in 1956. Gennady Estraikh (Albert B. Ratner Visiting Scholar in East European Jewish Literature at YIVO; NYU) reveals the debates that raged in the American Yiddish press in the wake of Fast’s departure.
