A Review of Some Outdated Foundational Hypotheses Underlying Psychoanalytic Theory

Freud’s fundamental discoveries date back to late 19th century. An attempt will be made to revisit these hypothesis from today’s vantage point. Concepts such as repression, the dynamic unconscious, and psycho-sexual development will be among the issues reviewed.
Edward Nersessian, M.D. is a Training and Supervising Analyst at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute and a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Weil-Cornell Medical College.

Educational Objectives: After attending, participants will be able to:
1. Reassess the role of psycho-sexual stages in development.
2. Better explain the difficulties inherent in the concept of repression.
3. Describe the current understanding of the notion of the unconscious.
