ART BORN OF THE GREAT WOUND
The relationship between trauma and creativity has been underexplored. The presenters will overview selective psychoanalytic theories of creativity and offer a new relational perspective on the creative process. Dissociation and witnessing are core concepts in this new view. Current dichotomous thinking and sweeping generalizations about survivors of catastrophic trauma will be challenged. Two case studies will illustrate how art can be used in the service of healing, mourning, and memorialization. This multimedia presentation will feature the creations of these artists in the form of memoir writing, painting, and music.

Spyros D. Orfanos, Ph.D., ABPP, is Clinic Director of the New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis; past President of the International Association for Relational Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy and former President of the Division of Psychoanalysis, American Psychological Association (1999); currently, the founding chair of the Humanities and Psychoanalysis Committee of the Division. He is the author of numerous publications on clinical process, culture, politics, and creativity. He is the producer of two art song cycle recordings, the first Enchanted Night in Greek, and the second Ay Amor in Spanish. Currently he is working on a third art song cycle recording, this time in Hebrew, the Mauthausen Cantata.
Sophia Richman, Ph.D., ABPP, is a psychologist and psychoanalyst, who holds a Diplomate in Psychoanalysis from the American Board of Professional Psychology. In addition to her private practice, Dr. Richman is a Supervisor at the New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Center for Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis of New Jersey, and a faculty member of the Stephen A. Mitchell Center for Relational Studies. In 2002, she authored the award winning A Wolf in the Attic: The Legacy of a Hidden Child of the Holocaust (Routledge). Her most recent book is Mended by the Muse: Creative Transformations of Trauma (Routledge, 2014). Dr. Richman is also a painter.
