Taming the Crew: Understanding & Coping with Childhood Aggression in the Context of Home & Family

Wendy Olesker, Ph.D., Free and open to the public, RSVP HERE or visit nypsi.org

Dr. Olesker will look at aggression from a developmental perspective. She will discuss the unfolding manifestations of aggression, typical developmental conflicts, and the role of the caregiver in helping children understand, channel, express, and contain anger as they grow. She will address the differences between normal and pathological aggression. Key ideas include: changing expectations and ways of handling as the child grows, the shaping influence of early experience, facilitating the development of conscience, and the importance of gentle, consistent limit setting.

Q & A to follow.

Dr. Wendy Olesker is a Training and Supervising Analyst at the New York Psychoanalytic Society & Institute and a Clinical Associate Professor at the NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy. She is on the Editorial Board of The Psychoanalytic Study of the Child and The International Journal of Psychoanalysis. Presently she is Director of the Postdoctoral Fellowship Program at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute. In 1975 until 1986 she established and ran, at Montefiore Medical Center, an observational nursery for research on gender differences in early development. From 1991 until 1997 she collaborated with John McDevitt and Anni Bergman in following up with the original Mahler/McDevitt babies of the Separation-Individuation Study. It is from her longitudinal research and her analytic experience that she has developed a focus on the developmental process as it impacts understanding and handling aggression in young children.

“Dialogues on…” events are geared towards professionals and parents who are involved with the care of children in the school and home environments. Educators, school administrators, community leaders, grandparents and parents are welcome.

The “Dialogues on…” series is made possible by a generous donation to NYPSI from The Poses Family Foundation. Additional funding was received from The James and Judith K. Dimon Foundation in honor of Ms. Themis Dimon.
