Nigeria, college campuses, bigotry and violence from Sasha Rolde on IP.net

Dear Colleagues,

As we try to absorb the world news about the abduction of hundreds of Nigerian girls all week, my heart goes out to their mothers on the eve of Mother’s Day. Browsing thru the international psychoanalytic website I have not found a plausible explanation for this atrocity, and can only say that at least we are trying to understand man and human nature from a different vantage point which perhaps some day will lead to an end of human brutality. I list below the posts which caught my own interest and urge you to look at the entire menu, read the posts that appeal and please comment.

My choices:

1) The Inaugural Lecture, “Freud, Moses and the Holocaust*** in Philadelphia. with speaker Eli Zaretsky, (Audio/Video)

2) Never Again: Echoes of the Holocaust as Seen Through Film by Syliva Ginsparg.

3) Both 1) & 2) touch upon the senseless brutalities seen in past and not so distant historical events. It seems that it is the writers of books and plays that try to find the answers. Note that both entries in the Plays Category concern themselves with past and present violence.

4) And in the USA we don’t handle crimes against women well either – please read Dr. Joseph Schachter’s letter to the NYT.

5) Dr. Schneider’s heartfelt entry in the papers category is well worth reading – as it reflects the experience of many.

VI. Letter by Joseph Schachter to the New York Times

If the rape of a college student is a crime, why doesn***t the victim report the crime to the police rather than to the college or university? College administrators, like upper level armed forces officers, have a vested interest in how sexual crimes are dealt with. The police don***t -or shouldn***t *** have a stake in the outcome.

In 1919, one of Sigmund Freud***s most brilliant prot**g**s, Viktor Tausk, died in a gruesome suicide. But who was really responsible for his death? Was it the act of a depressed young man looking for relief from his own internal demons? Or was he driven to his death by the manipulation of his mentor? In short *** was it suicide or murder by mind? The Murder Trial of Sigmund Freud explores the complicated and twisting internal landscape of this towering figure and creator of psychoanalysis.

Those of us still mourning the loss of former U.S.Poet Laureate Maxine Kumin, who died on February 6 of this year at 88, have a welcome gift, knowing that she didn***t stop. Her new book, And Short the Season (New York: W.W. Norton & Co., 2014) is available now, and her voice is as strong as it has always been. Sharp-eyed, keen-witted and ironic as ever, she shies away from nothing in this collection, dedicated to her daughter Judith, whom we feel we have watched grow in some earlier poems. Maxine loved the earth, dogs, animals, her husband ***..
