Adele Tutter presents a second essay on the aesthetic transformation of national and cultural identity as a means to defend against the dehumanization of political oppression. She juxtaposes a consideration of works of the Czech composer Leos Janáček and the Czech photographer Josef Sudek with personal reflections on being the child of a Czech dissident during the Cold War. We hope to engage the following issues:
1. Difficulties around memoir and self-disclosure in psychoanalytic writing.
2. The development of a monograph from serial essays with different aims.
The first essay in the series (Angel with a missing wing: Loss, restitution, and the embodied self in the photography of Josef Sudek. American Imago 70:127-190, 2013), provides context, and is available in pdf from the author (atutter@mac.com).
Adele Tutter, M.D., Ph.D. is Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Weill Cornell Medical College; Adjunct Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Columbia University School of Physicians & Surgeons; and Faculty, Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training & Research and the New York Psychoanalytic Institute. She sits on the editorial boards of American Imago, International Journal of Psychoanalysis, Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association, Psychoanalytic Quarterly and Psychoanalytic Inquiry. She is the author of Dream House: An Intimate Portrait of the Philip Johnson Glass House (University of Virginia Press), editor of The Muse: A Psychoanalytic Exploration of Creative Inspiration (Routledge), and coeditor, with Leon Wurmser, of Grief and its Transcendence: Memory, Identity, Creativity (Routledge). She is currently completing Mourning and Metamorphosis: Poussin’s Ovidian Vision.
Students, academics and clinical professionals in the analytic community are encouraged to attend.

1. Explain how creative expression of nationalist and cultural identity can help stabilize personal identity in the setting of political oppression.
2. Describe difficulties and concerns around the incorporation of memoir into psychoanalytic writing.
