Dr. Milrod will review central research avenues she has pursued. She will discuss her outcome studies in Panic Focused Psychodynamic Psychotherapy (PFPP), the only psychoanalytically-based psychotherapy to meet evidence-based treatment criteria for an anxiety disorder. She will describe newer research endeavors, including some of her early formulations on separation anxiety and attachment. She will also highlight work that she has just begun to develop, involving dissemination of dynamic based therapies to community settings.
Barbara Milrod, M.D. is Professor of Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College and is on the faculty of both the New York Psychoanalytic Institute and the Columbia Psychoanalytic Institute for Treatment and Research. She is an Associate Editor of the American Journal of Psychiatry, and serves on the Editorial Board of Psychoanalytic Psychology. She is an internationally-recognized expert in the area of clinical trials of psychotherapy outcome, particularly concerning anxiety disorders and psychoanalytic treatments, and has developed and tested an operationalized form of psychoanalytic psychotherapy for panic disorder, for which she has demonstrated efficacy. This continues to be the only psychoanalytic psychotherapy with demonstrated efficacy for an Axis I anxiety disorder. Dr. Milrod has received numerous awards and grants from a number of institutions, including the National Institute of Mental Health and the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation. She is currently developing and testing a psychoanalytic psychotherapy for non-responders with anxiety disorders and depression with her NARSAD Distinguished Investigator Award. She is married to John Markowitz, M.D., Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University, New York State Psychiatric Institute, and her son, James Koblenzer, is a politics major at Oberlin College.
The Leon Kupferstein Memorial Award for Innovation in Psychoanalysis was established in 2006 in honor of Dr. Leon Kupferstein, a graduate and past-President of the then New York Psychoanalytic Society (2001 – 2003). Dr. Kupferstein was a dedicated student of Sigmund Freud, but also possessed a firm belief that the art and science of psychoanalysis must move forward and respond to new discoveries about the human condition.
The inaugural recipient of NYPSI’s Leon Kupferstein Memorial Award for Innovation in Psychoanalysis was Dr. Kupferstein’s mentor and colleague, Dr. Charles Brenner. Dr. Kupferstein wished that Dr. Brenner be honored for his long-standing commitment and considerable body of work that has contributed so significantly to the current understanding and practice of psychoanalysis and its enduring value.
