Few discussions of Buddhism and psychoanalysis address one of the essential features of Buddhist philosophy: reincarnation and the evolution of the soul over many lifetimes. This talk will show how integrating psychoanalytic treatment with the Buddhist concept of “bag chags,” karmic patterns that form over many incarnations, can enhance psychodynamic work with certain patients. Since recent surveys indicate that over 25% of Americans, from all religious backgrounds, believe in reincarnation, analysts are likely to encounter this belief at some point in their work. Clinical material will be used in the presentation.
