This panel will take up a number of historical turning points at NYPSI. Changes in educational policy, in Institute practices, and, most important, in ideas about psychoanalysis will be reflected in presentations by the participants and in the discussion to take place among them. What landmark ideas and practices emanated from the early members of NYPSI? How did they evolve over time and why? What kinds of responses did they evoke? How did they serve or dis-serve the Institute’s reputation? What bearing might they have on the future of psychoanalysis? Such is the nature of the questions to be considered.

Participants:

Dr. Sander Abend, who attended the New York Psychoanalytic Institute in the late ’60s, is a Training and Supervising Analyst here and has taught a number of courses at this Institute for many years. He has also served as President of the Society. He has published widely and is a past Editor-in-chief of The Psychoanalytic Quarterly, where he is currently on the Board of Directors.

Dr. Leon Balter is a Training and Supervising Analyst and on the Faculty of the New York Psychoanalytic Institute. He is Associate Clinical Professor in Psychiatry at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and on the Editorial Board of The Psychoanalytic Quarterly.

Dr. Harold P. Blum is a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Institute for Psychoanalytic Education, Affiliated with New York University School of Medicine. He is the Former Executive Director of The Sigmund Freud Archives and the author of several books and more than 165 papers. Dr. Blum was the inaugural Sigourney Award Winner given by the American Psychoanalytic Association.

Dr. Anton Kris is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He has been a psychiatrist for over 50 years, a psychoanalyst for over 40 years, and a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute for over 30 years. He is the author of Free Association: Method and Process and numerous papers. Dr. Kris has served on the board of trustees of The Anna Freud Centre, The Sigmund Freud Archives, and The Anna Freud Foundation.

Dr. Theodore Shapiro is Professor Emeritus at the Weill Cornell Medical College and Training and Supervising Analyst at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute. He has lectured widely, focusing on the interplay of linguistics, development, and psychoanalytic theory and practice.

Students, academics and clinical professionals in the analytic community are encouraged to attend. Members of the general public are also welcome.
