SCIENTIFIC MEETING: Thursday, February 27, 2014 at 8:00 PM: Kenneth Winarick:
PSYCHOANALYTIC PLURALISM THROUGH THE LENS OF ENVY AND NARCISSISM

Psychoanalytic dialogue has tended toward creating dichotomous theoretical universes, with rigid boundaries that highlight “fundamental” differences between theories. These are often used to justify the superiority of one theory over another while obscuring common ground and the potential for integration and expansion. This presentation draws upon Klein’s, Kernberg’s and Horney’s views of the relationship between envy and narcissistic character structure to show that along significant differences there are marked similarities that make it possible for the approaches to complement each other and provide an example of how different theoretical perspectives, with different fundamental premises, can nevertheless share enough common ground to broaden our understanding and expand our clinical vision. The complementary relationship between Klein’s and Kernberg’s focus on narcissistic character structure, as a defense against projected destructive envious fantasies towards early objects and Horney’s view of narcissistic character structure, as a source of envious sadistic fantasies and actions directed toward anyone who is able to find pleasure and joy in life, will be emphasized.
