Flight of the Ibis is a musical drama with dance set in the Golden Age
of the Jews in the Umayyad Caliphate in 10th Century Cordoba, Spain. The Caliphate was by far the most advanced state in Europe at that time. It drew upon the cultures of the ancient world, and had a remarkable interfaith harmony among Muslims, Jews and Christians. The play involves three main characters with strong spiritual visions, who end up in self-sabotage due to their unresolved emotional issues—relevant for an understanding of conflicts and destructiveness in the world today. A staged reading of the play was first performed on November 17, 2011, Saint Peter’s Lutheran Church, 619 Lexington Avenue, New York City.
Alan Roland, Ph.D. is on the Faculty and Board of Directors of NPAP. He is the author of four books, an exhibiting visual artist and a playwright / librettist. Ruth Rosenbaum, Ph.D., L.P., is a teacher, supervisor and training analyst at NPAP, and on the Editorial Board of The Psychoanalytic Review. Ruth has taught courses at Columbia University on psychotherapy and spirituality. She writes and lectures on subjects related to the process of change in psychoanalysis.
