 In her studies of normal and disturbed young children, Margaret Mahler and her colleagues made important observations that revealed and made evident Freud’s four basic anxieties: loss of object, loss of love, castration and superego reproach. In this presentation, Dr. Hurvich adds a fifth danger, annihilation. Elaborating and expanding upon Mahler’s detailed, psychoanalytically sophisticated observations, he will show how a brittle and overwhelmed ego can be endangered by affecto-motor storms, overstimulation, organismic distress, separation and/or engulfment panic, etc., leading to a serious threat to the integrity of the ego functions and to the self. He uses the term Annihilation Anxieties to describe a Fifth danger associated with the threat of mental disorganization and considers it to be the common element in a group of disorders that he terms Overwhelmed/Disorganized Syndromes. These syndromes include experiences of panic, nightmares, psychic trauma, psychotic breaks and suicide. Using clinical material, Dr. Hurvich will show how annihilation Anxieties are revealed and how their manifestations can be used to better understand a patient’s level of development and pathology. He will consider how a deeper understanding of these anxieties can be used to structure psychotherapeutic interventions and sometimes improve outcomes.

Marvin Hurvich, Ph.D. is a recently retired Professor, Department of Psychology, Long Island University, Brooklyn Center.  Dr. Hurvich is a Faculty, Training & Supervisory Psychoanalyst at NYU and the contemporary Freudian Society. He is also a member of the IPA Clinical Observation Group and is on the PDM Task Force.  He is also a Fellow and Training analyst at IPTAR and, re the IPA Clinical Observation Group, he is now a consultant to the Group. He has over 40 publications, the most recent being in “Another Kind of Evidence”, by Norbert Freedman, Marvin Hurvich & Rhonda Ward, with Jesse Geller and Joan Hoffenberg (2011, Karnac) and a chapter on New Developments in the theory and Clinical Application of the Annihilation Anxiety Concept in the 2011 book, “A New Freudian Synthesis”, edited by Andrew Druck, Carolyn Ellman, Norbert Freedman and Aaron Thaler.
