When Long-Term Therapy is Not Long Enough with Douglas Ingram at MITPP

and
THE METROPOLITAN INSTITUTE
FOR TRAINING IN PSYCHOANALYTIC PSYCHOTHERAPY

WHEN LONG-TERM THERAPY IS NOT LONG ENOUGH
Saturday, DECEMBER 7, 2013
Presenter: DOUGLAS H. INGRAM, M.D.

Who are the patients who stay in treatment indefinitely, patients for whom the traditional notion of long-term therapy – with a termination date – is inadequate? Are the patients who stay on so fundamentally ill that they require psychotherapy forever or are they so constituted that they continue to find the relationship helpful? How do we know? What are the therapist’s ethical and countertransferential concerns in working with patients for whom it is unclear just where they fall on the continuum between the essential and merely helpful?

This clinical workshop will explore if, when or how, the concept of therapy as having an ending may impede the analytic work and perhaps even contribute an invisible mutilation to the process.

DOUGLAS H. INGRAM, M.D. Former Editor: Journal of the American Academy of Psychoanalysis and Dynamic Psychiatry; American Journal of Psychoanalysis. Fellow: American College of Psychoanalysts.
