The Psychoanalytic Contributions of Didier Anzieu:An Overview

Dr. Anzieu will review the work of pioneering French psychoanalyst Didier Anzieu (1923-1999). Beginning with Freud’s Self Analysis, written while he was in analysis with Lacan, Anzieu developed his own critique of modern psychoanalysis, emphasizing the roles of metaphor and bodily experience, and introducing such concepts as Paradoxical Transference and the technique of Transitional Analysis. Anzieu’s work on metaphor and body experience are crystallized in his elaboration of the Skin Ego and its consequences on analytic technique with borderline and narcissistic patients. This emphasis on metaphor in psychoanalysis led eminent French analyst Andre Green to call Anzieu his “imaginary twin.” Anzieu further developed his ideas about the importance of early bodily experiences to adult unconscious functioning in his theory on Psychic Envelopes and the Formal Signifiers. All the while, an abiding interest in art and creativity led Didier Anzieu to write these subjects in works including the book Le Genie Createur, and essays on the painter Francis Bacon and the writer Samuel Beckett. Anzieu’s work is the subject of a new book by one of his former French patients, Serge Tisseron.
Christine Anzieu-Premmereur, M.D., Ph.D. is a member of the faculty at the Columbia Psychoanalytic Center for Training and Research, where she is the director of the Parent-Infant Psychotherapy Training Program, and of the New York Psychoanalytic Institute. She is a member of the Société Psychanalytique de Paris and of the Association for Psychoanalytic Medicine and is Assistant Clinical Professor in Psychiatry at the Columbia University. Dr. Anzieu is a member of the American Psychoanalytic Association and the IPA. She has a private practice in New York as an adult and child psychoanalyst. She also consults with parents and babies. She has published two books in French, on play in child psychotherapy and on psychoanalytic interventions with parents and babies, and is the author of a number of book chapters and papers in English on motherhood, maternal functioning and child development, symbolization process in childhood, and techniques of intervention in early childhood.
Students, academics and clinical professionals in the analytic community are encouraged to attend.
