Joseph Cornell, the American Surrealist artist, produced the most magical and enchanting works from the 1930’s until his death in 1972. We will explore the sources of his creativity, using classical and contemporary psychoanalytic theories. Illustrated. Class participation invited.

Recommended before the first class: familiarity with Sigmund Freud’s “The Interpretation of Dreams” and “On Dreams,” vols. 4-5, Standard Ed., The Complete Psychological Works. Tr. James Strachey. Hogarth Press, 1900. Also available in paperback as separate volumes.

Dr. Melissa Wanamaker is a staff psychotherapist at Queens Consultation Center, and a lecturer and author of psychoanalytic articles on early childhood loss and creativity. Her latest work, “A Spectrum of Shadowed Mirroring,” was published in Psychoanalytic Quarterly (2012), 99:179-208. In the same year she published on the web, “Becoming Alexandra Styron,” a psychoanalytic profile of the author and her father, William Styron, the novelist. She is in private practice in Manhattan.
The Extension Program welcomes mental health professionals, trainees in fields of psychiatry, psychology, and social work, and any members of the community who are interested in psychoanalytic principles.
