Dear members of the Harlem Family community,
I have the delightful pleasure of announcing to you that our very own Salita Bryant was today awarded the Gradiva award for poetry at the annual conference of the National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis.
Salita, an assistant professor of English at Lehman College, is a candidate in her third year of psychoanalytic training with us. Her win, as well as being hugely significant in its own right, also offers her wonderful encouragement toward the end of an exceedingly demanding year in which she is up for tenure.
I’m sure I speak for us all when I say that we send her our heartfelt congratulations!
Her winning poem, “Anatomy Lesson: A Poem,” was published last year in the International Body Psychotherapy Journal: The Art and Science of Somatic Praxis. A copy of the poem as published in the journal’s pages is attached.
In reading it you may learn more than you ever thought to ask about our bodies: What is our largest sex organ? How many calories do we burn in a kiss? Are tears of our crying the same as our tears from the wind? Can we tell the difference between a koala’s fingerprint and a human’s? What organs can we shed and still live? And perhaps most important to Salita, are our bodies made up most of matter or of space?
I have also attached two photographs from today’s event – one of Salita holding her award beside an anonymous friend and another of Salita with the other winners as they posed for their official photograph.
Brava, Salita. We’re so very proud of you!
