CALL FOR IDEAS

Dear Members,

In the past, the IPA has issued a single “Call for Proposals”, inviting you to send us the title and an abstract for a paper you wished to present at a Congress. But for 2015 we are planning to do things a little differently. In addition to a Call for Proposals, which will come later in the process, we are starting our preparation for the Congress with a CALL FOR IDEAS from you. This is your opportunity to contribute to shaping the broader theme and content of the Congress, to help us develop a programme that is firmly focussed on the issues that are most pertinent to psychoanalysis today.

In initial discussions, the Programme Committee has identified four areas of particular interest:

• Theory and technique, including a focus on how reality interacts with theory.

• Diversity, including, for example, issues surrounding racial, gender, and sexual identities.

• Culture, including issues relating to immigration, emigration and movement, and politics.

• Technology, including how social media and ever-present connectedness is impacting individuals, relationships and psychoanalysis.

We would ask you to send us your ideas – for speakers, or for issues to be addressed, or for specific topics to be discussed, or for other areas that may be fertile for the Congress. This is NOT a call for proposals – please do not send us your proposal for a specific paper. We are seeking at this stage a much broader input – your most current thinking – to draw on your knowledge of the most interesting and relevant work today. Your responses and challenges will help us to develop our thinking, so that we can plan a Congress that meets the needs of IPA members and candidates, as well as our colleagues in related professions and associations.

Of course, with such a broad theme we may not be able to incorporate every angle that you might want to take, and we apologise in advance if your idea can’t be taken forward. There will be a second call later, with a further chance to send ideas although by then the focus will have been sharpened.

Please could you send your idea by 30 November 2013 by completing a simple online form (all personal information will be kept confidential and suggestions will be acted upon anonymously). To allow us to best appreciate your response, please aim to present one substantiated idea in 200 words or less. The form can be found here.

Sincerely,

Boston Congress Programme Committee (appointment pending)

Sergio Nick, Chair

Harriet Basseches, co-Chair (North America)

Claudia Borensztejn, co-Chair (Latin America)

Dieter Bürgin, co-Chair (Europe)

If the IPA is to function efficiently and economically it is vital that we stay in touch with our Members and Candidates and others who are close to us. We use e-mail to enable you to participate in – where appropriate – IPA elections, Congresses and other scientific meetings, or to announce the Business Meeting which determines our corporate governance. Nevertheless, to comply with legislation in some jurisdictions we have to offer you the opportunity to opt out of receiving all e-mail messages from the IPA (which means you may well not be able to participate in elections, etc). You can unsubscribe from all messages by clicking here.
