CFS-DC Scientific Program “DISORDERS IN THINKING”
November 15, 2013
5:30-7:30pm – Presentation
7:30-9:00pm – Catered Dinner
Robert Oelsner, MD, of Seattle, well known authority on the work of Bion and Meltzer , will lead an informal discussion, inspired by Donald Meltzer’s clinical applications of Bion’s ideas on the theory of thinking. Participants are not expected to have read Bion or Meltzer in order to understand and participate in this discussion, in preparation for the Annual Scientific Conference the following day.
Clinicians observe a range of thought disorders starting with a proto-mental activity akin to what in groups are automatic behaviors lead by un-thought basic assumptions and, in the individual by (psycho)somatic reactions. According to Bion’s theory of the “‘container/ contained” the proto-emotions develop into meaningful thoughts assisted by an “other” mind (i.e. the mother’s for an infant), the failure of which impairs the ability to think and dream. Furthermore, a negative relation between the container and the contained may not only cause a developmental arrest, but lead to a state of nameless dread. Dr. Oelsner will track the various possibilities from mild to severe disruptions in thinking and speak about clinical treatment of these conditions.
Learning Objectives:
As a result of this program participants will be able to:
1. Describe a framework for the recognition of thought disorders in which the mind can engage in a range of cognitive activities which block the mind’s growth.
2. Identify the mental processes which lead to differential diagnoses of learning difficulties and psychotic processes.
Continuing Education Credits:
