These four lectures will argue that psychoanalysis is a science, as Freud stated. The theories of Klein, Bion, and Segal will be discussed in light of that argument. The question of psychoanalysis as a science has been debated since its beginnings, and has a history of provoking intense polemics. The four lectures will examine the underlying question, and will also ask why these four are selected in the context of the Extension Program.
George Gross, M.D. is past President of NYPSI, past Medical Director of the NYPSI Treatment Center and a Training & Supervising Analyst at NYPSI.
The Extension Program welcomes mental health professionals, trainees in fields of psychiatry, psychology, and social work, and any members of the community who are interested in psychoanalytic principles.
Educational Objectives: This course is designed to help you:
1. Identify the seminal ideas of opposing arguments to the question of whether psychoanalysis is a science
2. Explain the tenets of each psychoanalytic theory represented by these four schools of psychoanalytic thought.
