Freud has given us psychological insights which might otherwise escape our conscious attention, though he himself acknowledged that they have illuminated the works of many writers. The course will begin with a couple of brief texts of Freud’s, then go on to discuss plays and stories by Sophocles, Euripides, Shakespeare, Lawrence, Joyce, Nietzsche (to whom Freud acknowledged a debt), among others.
Dr. Cavell received a Ph.D. in philosophy from Harvard University. She has trained in psychoanalysis at the Columbia Psychoanalytic Institute and the San Francisco Psychoanalytic Institute, has done clinical work in Berkeley and New York, and is an honorary member of the New York Psychoanalytic Society & Institute. She has taught courses in philosophy, philosophy and Freud, and psychoanalysis and literature at the University of California at Berkeley, SUNY Purchase, The New School, and Columbia University. She is the author of numerous articles and two books published by Harvard University Press and Oxford University Press.
The Extension Program welcomes mental health professionals, trainees in fields of psychiatry, psychology, and social work, and any members of the community who are interested in psychoanalytic principles.
Educational Objectives: This course is designed to help you:
1.Identify the application of psychoanalytic theory to understanding great works of literature
2.Identify the ways in which unconscious ideas about the human condition which are explored in literature predated but also confirmed Freud’s ideas about unconscious conflict and resolution
3.Use the profound discoveries of great art, especially through language, to shed light on psychoanalytic theories and their application.

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of the American Psychoanalytic Association and the New York Psychoanalytic Society and Institute. The American Psychoanalytic Association is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

NYPSI maintains responsibility for this program and its content. APA-approved CE credits are granted to participants with documented attendance and completed evaluation forms. At the end of the program, attendees will receive an evaluation form via email. Upon receipt of the completed evaluation form, attendees will receive a PDF via email of their CE credits.
