This year’s theme, Transience and Permanence, evokes beginnings and endings and everything in between.
The poles of transience and permanence give rise to the bittersweet tension of the human condition. Psychoanalysis has grappled this tension in our notions of love, loss, melancholy, object constancy, transference, resistance, termination, fragmentation and intersubjectivity.
Throughout the conference, embodying our theme, the Venerable Lama Losang Samten, will create an intricate Tibetan sand painting. We will witness the mandala take form, and can all participate in the profound dismantling ceremony.
Our Loewald winner is Dr. Arnold Richards, whose educational and editorial leadership shaped the rich interplay in today’s psychoanalysis. Our Distinguished Educators are graphic novelist Alison Bechdel with her Winnicottian insights into sexuality and relationships, Dr. Deborah Leupnitz who inspiringly brings the benefits of psychoanalysis to the recently homeless and Prof. Peter Hoffer whose translations allow us a window into an otherwise unreachable psychoanalytic past.
We hope you attend, enjoy, engage and are enriched by IFPE’s 2013 Conference, which, like the sand painting, will evolve as a holding space and then vanish–hopefully leaving us transformed and inspired to carry the conversation forward.
