Divorce: How to Maintain Positive Regard for Both Parents
Anna Balas, M.D.
RSVP www.nypsi.org under Events and Lectures
Divorcing couples often find it challenging to maintain positive regard for each other. Therefore, it is difficult to help their children hold on to good feelings for each parent. We will explore strategies for keeping a steady eye on the children’s best interests in the context of their emotional development.
Q&A to follow.
“Dialogues on…” events are geared towards professionals and parents who are involved with the care of children in the school and home environments. Educators, school administrators, community leaders, grandparents and parents are welcome.
Dr. Anna Balas is currently Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the Payne Whitney Division of New York Presbyterian Hospital and Weill Cornell Medical College. She is on the faculty of and a member of the New York Psychoanalytic Society & Institute. Dr. Balas is a sought after instructor on trauma and child development for psychoanalytic candidates, residents, public/private school teachers and parents. Given the prevalence of separation and divorce, she has pondered at length ways to help children master their experiences of loss when their own family divides up. In addition, she has a longstanding interest in psychoanalysis as applied to the arts.
The “Dialogues on…” series is made possible by a generous donation to NYPSI from The Poses Family Foundation. Additional funding was received from The James and Judith K. Dimon Foundation in honor of Ms. Themis Dimon.
