Living With(in) Terror

What takes place in the intersubjective space between a counter-terrorist and his or her terrorist? What happens when the terrorist becomes the prey? This unique program begins with a screening of an episode of the critically acclaimed television series Homeland. In our discussion, we will explore the parallel stories of the relationships between characters who work for the government with the terrorists whose crimes they aim to stop. We will explore the way these characters are both influenced by their own trauma histories, but also use their trauma histories to connect emotionally with their “prey,” and vice versa. How is disclosure used as a weapon?
Jessica Stern, PhD, is a Lecturer in Harvard University’s Government Department and a Fellow at Harvard’s FXB Center for Human Rights, an Advanced Academic Candidate at the Massachusetts Institute of Psychoanalysis, and a member of Hoover Institution’s Task Force on National Security and Law. She is the author of Denial: A Memoir of Terror, selected by the Washington Post as a best book of the year; Terror in the Name of God: Why Religious Militants Kill, selected by the New York Times as a notable book of the year; The Ultimate Terrorists; and numerous articles on terrorism and proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. She was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship for her work on trauma and terror, as well as an Erik Erikson Scholarship. She served on President Clinton’s National Security Council Staff in 1994–95.
Isaac Tylim, PsyD, is a Training Analyst and a Fellow of the IPA. He is Faculty and Supervisor at the New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, and a Fellow at IPTAR. Since 1997 he has served as Secretary of the IPA Committee on the United Nations. He is the co-founder of the Trauma and Disaster Specialization Program at the NYU Postdoctoral Program. A cultural critic, he is a regular contributor to the Buenos Aires Herald, and member of the Foreign Press Association. In 2002 he co-edited Terrorism and the Psychoanalytic Press, published by Pace University Press. Dr. Tylim is on the Editorial Board of JAPA. He lectures domestically and internationally, and has published widely on psychoanalytic issues. His most recent publication is “Technology and the Psychoanalytic Process.”
Learning Objectives – At the end of the program, participants will be able to:
1. Conceptualize the psychodynamics of the terrorist/counter-terrorist dyad.
2. Describe the link between past trauma and acts of terror.
3. Explain the role of identification with the omnipotent/symbiotic father figure in the psyche of the terrorist and counter-terrorist.
Who Should Attend:
Mental Health Professionals and people with an interest in the intersection of popular culture and psychoanalytic thinking.
CE Credits:
Psychologists: The Contemporary Freudian Society is approved by the American Psychological Association (APA) to sponsor continuing education programs for psychologists. CFS maintains responsibility for this program and its content. CE credits are granted to participants with documented attendance and completed evaluation forms. Attendance is monitored. Credit will not be granted to registrants who arrive late, or depart early. It is the responsibility of participants seeking APA-approved CE credits to comply with the requirements outlined below. Upon completion of these requirements, participants will be given 2.5 CE credits.

Basic Certification of Attendance forms will be emailed to ATR-BC’s and others at no charge if requested on the sign-in sheet.
The fee for 2.5 CE Credits for Members of CFS and Candidates of the PTI of CFS is $25, and for all others it is $50. If you would like CE credit, please check the appropriate box on the sign-in sheet. An evaluation form will be emailed to you. You will receive a PDF via email of your CE credits upon receipt of a hard copy of the completed evaluation form and your check (written to The Contemporary Freudian Society).
