This presentation will provide background as to children’s conceptual understanding of death at different ages and how the emotional and psychological issues impact on children at various developmental stages. A videotape of children talking about death will be shown.

“Dialogues on…” events are geared towards professionals and parents who are involved with the care of children in the school and home environments. Educators, school administrators, community leaders, grandparents and parents are welcome.

Dr. Patricia Nachman is a clinical psychologist and a child and adult psychoanalyst in private practice in New York City. She is on the faculty of, and a member of, New York Psychoanalytic Society & Institute. She is also Attending Psychologist, in the Department of Psychiatry, Mt. Sinai School of Medicine; and on the faculty in Psychiatry at Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Dr. Nachman is the former Director of Margaret S. Mahler Observational Research Nursery and a lecturer in graduate psychology at The New School. Prior affiliations include being Senior Research Scientist in the Laboratory for Developmental Processes headed by Dr. Daniel Stern in the Department of Psychiatry, of New York Presbyterian Hospital and Weill Cornell Medical Center. Through her clinical practice and research Dr. Nachman has gained considerable experience with children’s reaction to loss.
