Dear Collegues,
It’s Memorial Weekend in the USA- the coldest and rainiest that I recall in many years, but just right to spend time indoors reading the international psychoanalytic website posts. Some match the gloomy weather and the rather alarming natural and man made disasters around us, some are much more hopeful and inspiring but all very interesting and inviting your comments.
My choices this week include:
1) the post by Robert Frashure; Should Artists Fear Psychoanalysis is of particular interest to those of us who treat/have treated creative individuals who are afraid that their ability to create (write, paint, perform etc.) will be “analyzed away”.

2) It seems that the public is being increasingly treated to sobering news about DSM-5 viz. The Economist article on “Shrink wrapping”: “No other major branch of medicine has such a single text, with so much power over people*s lives. And that is worrying. Because in no other branch of medicine is the scientific reality underpinning the pronouncements of doctors so uncertain.”
and “The main criticisms are that it medicalises normal behaviour and that the strict categories of mental illness it creates are increasingly at odds with what research suggests is actually going on in the brain.”
Well worth reading.

3) Ellie – the computer “shrink” to diagnose patients? Please listen/read and comment.

4) The BOOKS Category contains more posts on the “psychiatric bible” and how it pathologies human feelings and behavior. I suggests you go to the BOOKS and chose which you relate to and decide how much damage it is likely to cause.

5) “A Psychotherapy for the People” by Lewis Aron & Karen Starr attempts to bring psychoanalysis into the present in a thoughtfull presentation well worth our while to contemplate
Click Here to Read This Article:
6) “The quick fix” in the USA. It seems that the French see ADHD as a psychosocial phenomenon which they treat with psychotherapy and/or family counseling. Where did we go wrong?- please read and comment
Click Here to Read This Article:
7) “talk therapy” (invitation to a dialogue in letters to the editor) – the focus on changing brain chemistry thru talk bypasses the idea of insight and learning thru the give and takeoff a relationship with the therapist – please read and comment.

8) So you think you remember? Please read the 2 excellent post on memory, one challenging your certainly that your recall is correct, the other on Brenda Milner’s work on charting memory in the brain in the 1950’s. Coincidentally I was an undergraduate psychology student at McGill at the time and studied with the Milners and followed the research at the Montreal Neurological Institute under Dr. Penfield.
