Beyond Right and Wrong: An Exploration of Justice and Forgiveness

This unique program begins with the screening of the soon-to-be-released documentary, Beyond Right and Wrong: Stories of Justice and Forgiveness. The poignant, psychologically rich, 80-minute film explores the relationship between aggressors and the families of their victims in areas of conflict around the world. Through interviews conducted with those on both sides of the conflict in Rwanda, Northern Ireland, and Israel/Palestine, the film examines the process of learning to forgive in the most difficult of circumstances. Beyond Right and Wrong is a meditation on the concept of justice in a troubled world. The director of the film, Roger Spottiswoode, is a native of England and Canada who began his career as a film director. He came to America in the early 1970’s. He has directed numerous films, among them: The Best of Times with Robin Williams, Shoot to Kill with Sidney Poitier, Turner and Hooch, and the James Bond thriller Tomorrow Never Dies. In recent years his main focus has been on more politically oriented films, both theatrical and made for television, including Under Fire, And the Band Played On, Hiroshima, Noriega, God’s Favorite, Spinning Boris, The Matthew Shepherd Story, and Shake Hands with the Devil. His film Beyond Right and Wrong was completed in 2012.
Dr. Albert Mason will discuss psychoanalytic approaches to forgiveness. Dr. Mason is interviewed in the film and brings his profound understanding of unconscious dynamics to illuminate the complex process of forgiveness.
Albert Mason, MB, BS, PsyD, FIPA, trained at the British Institute of Psychoanalysis and immigrated to the United States in 1969 with Wilfried Bion and Susanna Isaacs to further the work of Melanie Klein. Dr. Mason is a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Psychoanalytic Center of California and the New Center for Psychoanalysis in Los Angeles. He has published and taught extensively both here and abroad. He is a founding member and twice President of PCC, a founding Board Member of CIPS, and a past member of the House of Delegates of the International Psychoanalytical Association. Dr. Mason maintains a private practice in Beverly Hills.
Karen Proner, MS, LP, FIPA, an Adult and Child and Adolescent Psychoanalyst, is a member of CFS and a teaching faculty member of IPTAR. She was trained in England at the Tavistock. She is also a Training and Supervising Analyst for the Child and Adolescent Psychoanalysis Program of the Psychoanalytic Training Institute of CFS. She runs private infant observation groups and Kleinian clinical and theoretical groups for analysts who work with adults.
Learning objectives – Participants will be able to:
1. explain what is meant by the unconscious dynamics involved in justice and forgiveness.
2. describe a clinical approach to working on forgiveness that would encompass a shift from seeing the other as an object to seeing the other as a whole person, and apply it to clinical case material.
3. articulate what it means to increase the capacity for empathy and emotional containment.
Who Should Attend:
Mental Health Professionals (psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, licensed professional counselors, e.g., LP’s, LCAT’s, pastoral counselors), and people with an interest in psychodynamic and psychoanalytic thinking and clinical applications.
CE Credits:
Psychologists: The Contemporary Freudian Society is approved by the American Psychological Association (APA) to sponsor continuing education programs for psychologists. CFS maintains responsibility for this program and its content. CE credits are granted to participants with documented attendance and completed evaluation forms. Attendance is monitored. Credit will not be granted to registrants who arrive late, or depart early. It is the responsibility of participants seeking CE credits to comply with the requirements outlined below. Upon completion of these requirements, participants will be given 2.5 CE credits.
Certificates of Attendance and CE Credit Information:
Basic Certification of Attendance forms will be emailed to ATR-BC’s and others at no charge if requested on the sign-in sheet.
The fee for 2.5 CE Credits for Members of CFS and Candidates of the PTI of CFS is $25, and for all others it is $50. If you would like CE credit, please check the appropriate box on the sign-in sheet. An evaluation form will be emailed to you. You will receive a PDF via email of your CE credits upon receipt of a hard copy of the completed evaluation form and your check (written to The Contemporary Freudian Society).
