Dear colleagues,
the international website content this week is colossal and multidimensional, and no summary of mine will do it justice. It does reflect all the concerns in the news from the psychodynamic point of view, be it terrorism, DSM-V, S. Freud’s couch, our brains or the increase in carbon dioxide content in the air we breathe. I will try not to have duplication of post which I have listed previously.
My choices this week are:
1) The Myth of the Adolescent Brain *** – “If indeed the objective of adolescence is to gain independence from parents, then providing opportunities for adolescents to engage in new responsibilities is essential. Without opportunities and experiences to help shape an adolescent***s brain and behavior optimally, the objectives of this developmental phase will not be easily met.”
Above quote is from Dr. BJ Casey’s talk to be given at IPTAR. Please note on how much harder it is now to give teenagers the rope they need in today’s more and more dangerous school and societal environment, while at the same time the opportunities increase.
I recommend that those of you who can attend should do so.

2) a) DSM-5 is the major topic on the website this week, with two many entries for me to chose from , so I will only mention a couple here, but let me say that none of the others seems to be very complimentary.
a) It seems that DSM-V will be and “art exhibit” at the Moynihan Post Office , across from the Madison Square garden, where an superb collection of art will be seem and ‘raise questions about the norms of conventional perception and behavior?” – i.e. life. If I could foretell the future, I would say that this will be the best use of the DSM-V that I can think of. I am certain that this was not the intention of it’s authors.

b) My assertion I think gains validity if you read “The Pernicious Politics of the DSM-V” in the BOOKS category.

4) The Psychiatric News website article on “Infants’ Inconsolable Crying Increases Postpartum Depression Risk” in the GENERAL NEWS Category seems to miss an important point – at least in my opinion. It is also very likely that a mother’s post partum depression is likely to increase an infant’s inconsolable crying if she is not in tune and is emotionally unavailable to the infant.

Lisken Van Pelt Dus
Our poet this month is both multi-talented and rich in background and experience. A teacher and martial artist (yes, that***s right; she teaches classical Okinawan karate and kobudo (weapons) at a martial arts studio of which she and her husband Bob are co-owners). Her more conventional job is as a teacher of writing and languages at Monument Mountain Regional High School in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. I seem to recall that she is also a fine musician.
Raised internationally, in England, the U.S. and Mexico, she arrived in the Berkshires from London to attend Williams College, where she earned a B.A. in religion. Subsequently, she completed a Master***s in Comparative Literature from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
