Families. We can all tell stories about our own – aunts, siblings, step-parents, grandparents, as well as “the black sheep,” “the favorite,” “the youngest,” and that one uncle no one talks about. This presentation focuses on the dynamics of the family from a psychological perspective, and making a little more sense of why your family is as it is. We will be discussing:

Ÿ How families operate as a system
Ÿ The role you play in the system, and the reason your family needs you to stay exactly the same
Ÿ Why you are “the black sheep,” “the favorite,” “the forgotten one,” or the one who gets away with everything
Ÿ The psychological family tree: understanding your specific family’s conflicts; family members who are in conflict, others who are very close to each other, those who share personality traits, and parallels seen among the generations
Ÿ Hand-me-down trauma and secrets from previous generations
Ÿ Family trauma and its impact on individual family members
Ÿ Fun fact: you’re closer to your grandmother than you think!
Presenter: Halley Wolowiec, LMHC, is a practicing psychotherapist in New York City.
