In the last twenty years the task of defining psychoanalytic terms and concepts has become ever more challenging as theoretical pluralism and postmodern perspectives dominate the intellectual and cultural terrain. Drawing upon their experience as co-editors-in-chief of the recently published Psychoanalytic Terms and Concepts (fourth edition), Elizabeth Auchincloss and Eslee Samberg explore the interface between psychoanalytic lexicography, theory and politics. They place their discussion within the historical and cultural context of language politics past and present. The presenters use Psychoanalytic Terms and Concepts as a “case report” to highlight these issues, describing specific problems and controversies generated and their strategies for finding resolution among points of view.

Psychoanalytic Terms and Concepts (fourth edition) is a hybrid of dictionary, encyclopedia, annotated bibliography, textbook, and intellectual history. The volume explicates psychoanalytic terms and concepts used in the discourse of contemporary North American English-speaking clinical psychoanalysis. The overriding mission of the volume is to help those interested in psychoanalysis achieve a better understanding of the terms we use to describe the human mind and interaction with other human minds in everyday life, development, psychopathology, and the clinical setting. It was conjointly published in Oct 2012 by the American Psychoanalytic Association and Yale University Press.

A book signing will follow the event.

Students, academics and clinical professionals in the analytic community are encouraged to attend. Members of the general public are also welcome.

Join us for light refreshments from 7:30 to 8 p.m.
