I HATE MY PATIENT. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG?
Saturday, April 13, 2013
Presenter: Shelly Petnov-Sherman, L.C.S.W.
The definition of “Countertransference” has shifted as theoretical paradigms have come to include the therapist/analyst as co-participants within the therapeutic dyad. The therapist’s feelings are no longer the residue of an incomplete or inferior analysis but necessary to the process of treatment. The therapist must be able to “hold” the multitude of shifting, conflictual experiences and feelings including those previously judged as contaminants to the therapeutic/analytic relationship, including the unwanted, disowned or dissociated destructive/negative feelings the therapist/analyst may feel toward a patient. These feelings are often left unexplored both in the treatment room and with supervisors and teachers.
Shelly Petnov-Sherman, LCSW, will present her clinical work with a patient who has extreme feelings of hatred toward her. She will explore her own reactive hatred and her self- condemnation for these feelings. She will consider how the therapist uses and “holds” negative feelings, how the therapeutic relationship may be experienced under these conditions, and how the therapist can untangle the enactments born out of negative feelings in the work with self and patient. The focus will be on clinical material in an ongoing treatment. Winnicott’s contributions and other theoretical models will be offered in the service of facilitating a deeper and more compassionate perspective toward these often denied/dissociated experiences of self and patient.
“Hate in the Countertransference” written by D.W. Winnicott written in 1947 is the seminal article in addressing and exploring the notion of hate. It is suggested reading for this workshop.
